What are Mandalas?

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

Welcome to my blog! I'm excited you're here. Mandalas are seen all over the world lately. And in reality, they've been around the world for centuries. Is there anything special about mandalas? And how have different cultures across the world tapped into creating similar designs with little to no connection. Let's discover the secrets behind these magical patterns.

Mandalas are far more than just geometric patterns or shapes to color in.

With roots in Hinduism and Buddhism, mandalas have served as a sacred symbol for centuries and represent wholeness, harmony, and the infinite nature of the universe. In fact, the word mandala is Sanskrit for “circle.”

Mandalas come in many forms. Dating as far back as the 4th century, they were often painted on scrolls and taken with travelers over long distances across the Eurasian continent.

A mandala is a symbol of the universe in its ideal form, and its creation signifies the transformation of a universe of suffering into one of joy. It can also be used as an aid to meditation, helping the meditator to envision wholeness and completion.

Mandalas are not exclusive to any religion or culture, though. Other cultures and religions also have symbols or images that are evocative of mandalas. Consider the dream catchers of Native Americans, and the Celtic cross and circular stained glass windows of churches. They all have circular designs with repeating shapes and patterns that radiate from the center.
